The married man, named Dan Gallagher, is played by Michael Douglas, and his one night stand, named Alex Forrest, is played by Glenn Close. Dan is happily married with a wife named Beth, played by Anne Archer, and a young daughter. However, when he has a brief affair with Alex while his family is away for the weekend, Alex becomes obsessed with him and begins to stalk him.
At first, Dan tries to break things off with Alex and return to his normal life, but Alex is not willing to be brushed aside so easily. She begins calling him at work and at home, and even shows up at his office unannounced. As her behavior becomes more erratic and dangerous, Dan realizes that he has made a big mistake by getting involved with her.
Things come to a head when Alex breaks into Dan's home and attacks Beth, leading to a violent confrontation between Dan and Alex that ends in tragedy.
Fatal Attraction was a groundbreaking film when it was first released in 1987, as it introduced the concept of a "bunny boiler" – a woman who becomes crazed and violent after being rejected by a man. The movie has since become a classic of the thriller genre, and Glenn Close's performance as Alex Forrest has become iconic.
