Rivals in the Ring: Boxing Drama

Drama  United States of America

Fat City is a 1972 drama film directed by John Huston and adapted from the 1969 novel of the same name by Leonard Gardner. The movie follows the lives of two boxers, Billy Tully (Stacy Keach) and Ernie Munger (Jeff Bridges), who train and spar at the same gym in Stockton, California.

Tully, a washed-up boxer, struggles with alcoholism and unemployment as he tries to make a comeback in the ring. He begins a romantic relationship with an alcoholic waitress named Oma (Susan Tyrrell) but soon realizes that his drinking is ruining his chances of success.

On the other hand, Munger, a younger and promising fighter, finds success early on in his career but quickly becomes disillusioned with the boxing world. He decides to quit boxing and pursue a more stable career as a salesman.

As Tully continues to spiral downward in his personal and professional life, Munger's new job allows him to thrive financially but leaves him unfulfilled and longing for the excitement of the ring. Eventually, Tully and Munger face off in a rematch, but the fight is not the triumph either man was hoping for.

The film explores themes of ambition, disillusionment, and the harsh realities of working-class life in America. It received critical acclaim and was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Susan Tyrrell's performance as Oma.
