Fargo is a black comedy crime film written, produced, edited, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. The film was released in 1996 and stars Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, and Peter Stormare.

The story takes place in Minnesota and revolves around Jerry Lundegaard (Macy), a desperate car salesman who hires two criminals, Carl Showalter (Buscemi) and Gaear Grimsrud (Stormare), to kidnap his wife, Jean (Kristin Rudrüd), so that he can collect a hefty ransom from his wealthy father-in-law. However, the plan goes awry when the kidnappers kill several people, including a state trooper and two witnesses, before being caught by the police.

Leading the investigation is Police Chief Marge Gunderson (McDormand), who is also pregnant. With her folksy charm, practical demeanor, and sharp investigative skills, Marge uncovers a web of deceit and violence that culminates in a showdown with the kidnappers.

Fargo received critical acclaim and won several awards, including two Oscars for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for McDormand. The film's dark humor, quirky characters, and distinctive Midwestern setting have made it a cult classic and one of the Coen brothers' most beloved films.
