The young man is named Joseph Donnelly (played by Tom Cruise) and the landlord's daughter is named Shannon Christie (played by Nicole Kidman). After a violent confrontation with Shannon's father, they flee to America to start a new life.
In Oklahoma, they settle in a small town and find work on a ranch owned by a wealthy man named Daniel Christie (Shannon's uncle). Joseph becomes involved in bare-knuckle boxing matches to earn extra money, and quickly becomes successful. However, he eventually faces a brutal opponent who injures him severely and ends his boxing career.
To make matters worse, Daniel Christie steals all of their savings and leaves them struggling to survive the harsh winter. Joseph and Shannon are forced to work odd jobs just to maintain their meager existence. Despite these setbacks, they remain committed to their dream of owning their own land and building a new life together.
Complicating matters further, Shannon's parents arrive in America searching for their daughter. They are wealthy and powerful, and are determined to take Shannon back to Ireland by any means necessary.
As Joseph and Shannon struggle to overcome these obstacles, they grow closer and their love deepens. In the end, they manage to overcome the odds and realize their dream of owning their own land.
