The main character of the movie is Aunt Karen, who has always struggled to connect emotionally with others due to her own traumatic past. When her niece, Lily, comes to stay with her for the summer, Karen sees it as an opportunity to finally build a relationship with someone in her family.
However, Karen quickly realizes that Lily is not interested in the traditional family togetherness that Karen has in mind. Lily is obsessed with the Juggalo subculture and dreams of running away to join them on their tour.
As Karen tries to bond with Lily over shared interests and hobbies, she begins to realize how little she knows about her niece and the world she inhabits. Along the way, Karen is forced to confront the secrets of her own past and how they have affected her relationships with others.
Throughout the film, Karen and Lily struggle to find common ground and navigate the challenges of their vastly different lifestyles. Ultimately, they discover that family is not only about blood ties, but about the love and connection that can be formed between people who care for one another.
