An Unlikely Love in Korea

Romance,Drama  South Korea

Failan is a 2001 South Korean romantic drama film directed by Song Hae-sung and starring Choi Min-sik and Cecilia Cheung. It is based on the Japanese novel Love Letter by Jiro Asada and tells the heartfelt story of a young Chinese woman named Failan who travels to Korea in search of her last surviving family members. When she arrives in Korea, she learns that her relatives have moved to Canada and she is left all alone.

Desperate to stay in Korea, Failan decides to search for a job. However, without proper identification documents, she finds it difficult to secure a decent job. Eventually, she is introduced to a match-making agency and is encouraged to have an arranged marriage with someone who can sponsor her stay in the country. Through the agency, she meets Kang-jae, a rough and tough small-time gangster who is struggling to make ends meet.

Kang-jae agrees to the marriage proposal because he needs money to pay off his debts and sees this as an opportunity to get his hands on some cash. The two get married but soon find that they are complete strangers who are unable to communicate with each other due to the language barrier. However, Failan begins to develop feelings for Kang-jae, who slowly starts to reveal a softer side of himself.

Failan spends most of her time cooped up inside their small apartment, writing letters to her deceased parents, and dreaming about a better life. Her loneliness and longing for love soon become evident to Kang-jae, and he too starts to feel for her. As they begin to understand each other better, they must face their respective pasts and personal demons to build a future together.

The movie ends with a beautiful twist that will leave viewers with tears in their eyes. Failan is a touching and emotional movie about love, loss, and human connection that will resonate with audiences worldwide.
