Fade to Black is a psychological thriller film directed by Vernon Zimmermann and released in 1980. The movie tells the story of Eric Binford, a socially awkward and introverted film fanatic who lives with his abusive aunt in Los Angeles. Eric spends most of his time alone, watching classic movies and studying film history.
As Eric's obsession with movies becomes more and more extreme, he starts to emulate his favorite characters and scenes from the films. He dresses up like his favorite actors, begins quoting movie lines in everyday conversation, and even starts to see himself as the hero of his own movie.
However, Eric's mental health deteriorates rapidly and he becomes increasingly violent. He begins stalking women who resemble his favorite screen idols and kills anyone who gets in his way, including the school bully who tormented him, his boss who fired him, and a movie critic who panned his favorite film.
As the body count rises, Eric's behavior becomes more erratic and bizarre. He starts to believe that he is actually living in a movie and that he can never be caught or harmed. But his delusions eventually catch up with him, and he is forced to confront the reality of his situation.
In the end, Eric's tragic fate serves as a cautionary tale about the danger of losing oneself in a world of fantasy and fiction. The film is a chilling commentary on the power of films to shape our perceptions of reality and the dangers of becoming too immersed in our own fantasies.
