John Travolta stars as Bobby, a struggling single father trying to provide for his young daughter, Tina (played by young actress Ellayn J. Taylor). Tina is a smart and resourceful child, but their lives are tough. Bobby works as a courier for a shady businessman, but when he discovers he has inadvertently been transporting drugs, he decides to flee Chicago with Tina.
Meanwhile, a group of criminals are after Bobby, believing he has stolen drugs from them. During their escape, Tina discovers a wounded Doberman Pinscher in an alleyway. Against her father's wishes, she insists on taking the dog with them, nursing it back to health as they journey cross-country towards Los Angeles.
The journey is perilous, with the criminals hot on their heels. Travolta's character must protect his daughter and the dog, while also avoiding capture by the dangerous criminals who are after him. Along the way, the bond between Bobby, Tina, and the dog grows stronger, bringing hope and joy to their otherwise difficult lives.
