The film Eye of the Needle, based on the novel by Ken Follett, tells the story of a German spy named Heinrich Faber (played by Donald Sutherland) who is tasked with gathering information about the Allied invasion of Normandy, codenamed Operation Overlord, in the summer of 1944. Faber goes by the code name "The Needle" because of his signature weapon, a stiletto.
Faber is pursued by British intelligence, led by a spy catcher named Godliman (played by Ian Bannen), but manages to evade them and heads to the coast of Scotland to rendezvous with a U-boat that will take him back to Germany.
Along the way, Faber meets a young woman named Lucy Rose (played by Kate Nelligan) and her disabled husband David (played by Christopher Cazenove) who live on a remote island. Faber poses as a stranded hiker and gains their trust, but ultimately must decide whether to complete his mission or risk everything to help Lucy and David.
As the story unfolds, Faber becomes more emotionally involved with Lucy and begins to question his loyalty to Nazi Germany. Meanwhile, Godliman closes in on Faber's whereabouts and a tense cat-and-mouse game ensues.
Eye of the Needle is a gripping thriller that explores themes of love, loyalty, and sacrifice against the backdrop of one of the pivotal moments in World War II.
