In Exorcist II: The Heretic, Regan MacNeil (played by Linda Blair) is now a teenager living with her guardian Sharon Spencer (played by Louise Fletcher). Regan is still haunted by the traumatic events of her possession and exorcism four years prior and is now experiencing bizarre nightmares and strange visions.
Meanwhile, a Vatican investigator named Father Lamont (played by Richard Burton) is sent to investigate the circumstances surrounding Father Merrin's death during Regan's exorcism. While conducting his investigation, Lamont discovers that Regan may still be possessed by the demon that possessed her four years ago.
Lamont seeks the help of a hypnotic research specialist named Dr. Tuskin (played by Louise Fletcher) to unlock Regan's memories and uncover the truth about her possession. As they delve deeper into Regan's psyche, they are confronted with the demon Pazuzu, who is still intent on possessing Regan.
The film explores themes of psychology, spirituality, faith, and mythology, as Lamont and Tuskin attempt to free Regan from the demon's grasp. The movie is a sequel to the 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist, and was released in 1977, directed by John Boorman.
