The movie Evil Under the Sun is based on the novel of the same name by Agatha Christie and stars Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot. In the movie, Poirot is hired by a wealthy socialite named Arlena Stuart (played by Diana Rigg) to investigate a stolen diamond. Arlena suspects that her husband and his mistress are responsible for the theft.
Poirot travels to an exclusive island resort off the coast of Devon, where Arlena and her husband Kenneth (played by Denis Quilley) are vacationing with a group of rich and famous guests. Among the guests are a famous stage actress named Daphne Castle (played by Maggie Smith), a flamboyant fashion designer named Rosamund Shane (played by Diana Quick), and a writer named Rex Brewster (played by Roddy McDowall).
As Poirot investigates the diamond theft, tensions rise among the guests, and Arlena is found murdered on the beach. Poirot must use all of his detective skills to unravel the complex web of motives and alibis that surround the guests, all of whom seem to have something to hide.
