Sissy Hankshaw is not content with her life as a model and feels unfulfilled. She is also struggling with her desires as a lesbian, which starts to surface after she meets Bonanza Jellybean who introduces her to her all-female community of cowgirls. The cowgirls are living independently, rejecting societal norms and creating their own world. Sissy finds herself drawn to Bonanza and the community and decides to stay with them in order to find herself.
However, the community becomes under threat when a group of male corporate developers tries to take over their land. Sissy and the cowgirls team up with a group of environmental activists to protect their land and their way of life. In the meantime, Sissy learns more about herself and her desires as a lesbian, while also finding love with another woman in the community.
The movie is based on a novel of the same name by Tom Robbins and is known for its exploration of feminism, sexuality, and individualism.
