E.T. is a 1982 science-fiction film that was directed by Steven Spielberg. It stars Henry Thomas as Elliott, Robert MacNaughton as Michael, and Drew Barrymore as Gertie. The film also features a supporting cast that includes Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, and K.C. Martel.
E.T. tells the story of a friendly extraterrestrial that is accidentally left behind on Earth after his spaceship takes off without him. When he is discovered by Elliott, a young boy who lives in a suburban California neighborhood, he is initially frightened by the strange creature, but quickly befriends him.
Elliott brings E.T. back to his house, where he introduces him to his brother and sister, Michael and Gertie. The children hide E.T. from their mother, who is unaware of his existence, and go to great lengths to keep him from being discovered by the authorities.
As the days go by, Elliott and E.T. form a strong bond, and the alien learns about life on Earth. He also develops a telepathic connection with Elliott, which allows the two to communicate without speaking.
However, E.T. soon falls ill, and Elliott and his siblings are forced to reveal his existence to a group of adults who arrive to take him away for study. The children go on a mission to help E.T. return home, and they ultimately succeed in helping him communicate with his spaceship and escape back to his own planet.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was a critical and commercial success and is widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all time. It won four Academy Awards and has inspired a huge fan following, as well as numerous references and homages in popular culture.
