The two chimpanzees, named Cornelius and Zira, are taken into custody by the government and quickly become media sensations. They reveal that they are the survivors of a catastrophic event on their home planet, which forced them to travel back in time to Earth. As they spend more time with humans, they begin to learn about human culture and behavior, and even fall pregnant with a baby chimpanzee.
Meanwhile, a scientist named Dr. Otto Hasslein becomes convinced that the talking primates are a danger to human society and decides to take drastic measures. He discovers that Zira's baby will eventually grow up to lead a revolution that will overthrow the human race, and sets out to stop it from happening.
As Cornelius and Zira struggle to acclimate to their new surroundings, they become embroiled in a dangerous political intrigue that threatens to destroy their new home. In a stunning finale, the truth about their origins is revealed, and Cornelius and Zira face a terrifying choice that will determine the fate of the planet and all that live on it.
