Escape from Alcatraz is based on a true story that took place in June 1962. The three prisoners who managed to slip their way out of the prison were Frank Morris (played by Clint Eastwood), and the brothers John and Clarence Anglin (played by Fred Ward and Jack Thibeau, respectively).
The movie depicts the meticulous planning and execution of the escape, which involved fashioning dummy heads (using hair from the prison barbershop) to leave in their beds so as to fool the guards during nightly head counts. The three men also fashioned crude rafts out of raincoats and floated off into the San Francisco Bay in the dead of night.
While the escape was successful, their ultimate fate remains a mystery. The movie leaves it open to interpretation as to whether they survived or succumbed to the treacherous waters and harsh conditions of the bay.
