Esau is a drama film directed by Pavel Lungin and written by Elise Mizrahi. It tells the story of Yakov (baruch Brener) a successful writer who fled his family and home in Israel for America 20 years ago, and now returns to sell the property as part of settling their late father's estate. Upon his return, Yakov is immediately confronted by his estranged brother, Esau (Harvey Keitel), who stayed behind to run the family bakery and married the woman they both loved, Leah (Lior Ashkenazi).
As Yakov reacquaints himself with his childhood home, he must confront the painful memories that drove him away, and grapple with the fact that his brother has seemingly built a happy life for himself in his absence. Meanwhile, Esau is struggling to keep the bakery afloat, and is tempted to sell it to a wealthy businessman who offers him a lucrative deal.
Throughout the film, Yakov and Esau must navigate their complex relationship and confront their unresolved issues from the past. As tensions come to a head, they must decide whether they can find a way to forgive each other and move forward, or whether their longtime feud will forever divide them.
With powerful performances from Brener, Keitel, and Ashkenazi, Esau is a moving exploration of family, forgiveness, and the inescapable ties that bind us to our past.
