Eroica is a 1958 Polish film directed by Andrzej Munk and was one of the first Polish feature films to address the topic of World War II. The movie is divided into two parts, the first being "Scherzo alla polacca" and the second being "Ostinato lugubre".

In "Scherzo alla polacca", we follow the story of a young man named Staszek who is initially reluctant to join the resistance movement in Warsaw during the uprising. He is shown as a drunkard who tries to avoid any confrontation with the Germans and tries to preserve his own life. However, as the war progresses, Staszek gradually realizes the atrocities committed by the Germans and makes the decision to join the resistance. The final scene shows Staszek leading a group of resistance fighters into battle against the Germans, with a newfound sense of courage and heroism.

In "Ostinato lugubre", we follow the story of a group of prisoners of war who are held in a German prison camp. The focus is on a man named Lieutenant Zawada who becomes increasingly disillusioned with the pointless and absurd rules enforced by the German officers. Eventually, he decides to make a daring escape with another prisoner but is forced to hide in a nearby village. The rest of the prisoners are punished for his escape but are also inspired by his bravery. The final scene shows Zawada returning to the camp to inspire his fellow prisoners and continue their resistance against the Germans.

Overall, Eroica is a significant film in Polish cinema history and portrays the hardships and heroism of the Polish people during World War II. It is a tribute to the resilience and courage of ordinary people who are forced to confront extraordinary circumstances.
