Ernest Goes to Camp follows the misadventures of Ernest P. Worrell, a bumbling handyman who is tasked with overseeing a group of juvenile delinquents at Kamp Kikakee, a summer camp for troubled youth. Ernest dreams of becoming a guidance counselor, and he sees this job as an opportunity to prove himself.
However, things quickly go awry when a strip mining company comes to town, led by greedy executive Sherman Krader. Krader wants to close down the camp and mine the land, despite protests from the local community.
