The Birth of Peking Opera: A Journey to Forbidden City

History  China

Enter the Forbidden city is a historical drama film that tells the story of the origins of Peking Opera. The story is set in 1900 during the Qing dynasty and centers around the Emperor's 80th birthday celebration, which is a grand affair attended by dignitaries, officials, and performers from across China.

During the celebrations, a group of southern opera performers arrive to perform for the Emperor. Their performance is so impressive that they are invited to stay in Beijing and become part of the court. The head of the opera troupe, Master Guan, is initially reluctant to stay in the capital, but he is eventually convinced by his daughter, Xiaodouzi, who sees the opportunity to showcase their art to a larger audience.

The film follows the struggles and challenges faced by the opera performers as they navigate the strict royal protocol, cultural differences, and rivalries among the different opera troupes in Beijing. Master Guan and his troupe, in particular, face discrimination and ridicule from the established Peking Opera performers, who consider them inferior and uncultured.

Despite these challenges, Xiaodouzi and her father persevere, and over time, they win over the audience and earn the respect of their fellow performers. Through their hard work and dedication, they successfully blend the Southern and Northern opera styles, creating a new form of opera that becomes known as Peking Opera.

Enter the Forbidden City is a visually stunning film that offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of China. The film showcases the intricate costumes, elaborate makeup, and acrobatic movements that are hallmarks of Peking Opera, and provides an inspiring portrayal of the tenacity and artistry of the early pioneers of this art form.
