The movie End of the Century follows the story of Ocho, a freelance writer from New York, who travels to Barcelona on vacation and meets Javi, a local architect. The two men spend a day together, exploring the city, talking about their lives and sharing intimate moments.
As they get to know each other better, Ocho and Javi realize that they had actually met twenty years ago when they were both in their 20s and had a brief encounter. The revelation prompts them to question the choices they made in their lives and wonder what would have happened if they had stayed together.
The movie explores themes of memory, regret, and the fluid nature of time. It also touches on the complexities of relationships, particularly those that are rekindled after many years.
End of the Century premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in 2019 and was praised for its honest portrayal of same-sex relationships and the stunning cinematography of Barcelona. It was written and directed by Lucio Castro, who drew on his own experiences of reconnecting with a former lover after many years.
