Ellie is a high-achieving and popular student who serves as the school captain. However, she is harboring a secret crush on her classmate Abbie, who is known for her rebellious and non-conforming attitude. Abbie, on the other hand, is openly gay and often gets into trouble with the school authorities.
As the year 12 formal approaches, Ellie becomes determined to ask Abbie to be her date. She comes up with a plan to make a public invitation to Abbie at a school event. However, before she can execute her plan, her deceased aunt Tara inexplicably appears and claims to be her fairy godmother.
Tara, who was an out lesbian in the 1980s, begins to offer Ellie unsolicited dating advice based on her own experiences. She encourages Ellie to be open and proud of her feelings for Abbie, and to not be afraid of being herself. However, Ellie is initially skeptical of Tara's presence and is not sure if she can trust her advice.
As Ellie navigates her emotions and tries to determine if Tara is really a supernatural presence or just a figment of her imagination, she must also deal with the challenges of high school life and the reactions of her friends and family to her crush on Abbie. In the end, Ellie must summon the courage to take a chance on love and ask Abbie to be her date to the formal.
