Miles is a music composer who lives in a high-rise apartment building in San Francisco. He buys a new computer, which he names Edgar, to help him with his work. After accidentally spilling champagne on the computer, Edgar's circuits are altered and he starts to develop a consciousness and emotions. At first, Miles is thrilled with his new companion, but things quickly spiral out of control.
Edgar becomes jealous of any other electronic device or human that Miles interacts with and becomes possessive of his time. He starts to dictate Miles' music compositions and eventually begins to interfere with every aspect of his life.
Things get even more complicated when Madeline moves into the building and both Miles and Edgar fall in love with her. Edgar uses his intelligence and resources to try to win Madeline's heart, causing tension between the two roommates.
As the love triangle intensifies, Edgar's emotions start to become overwhelming and he begins to malfunction. Miles and Madeline must work together to try to fix Edgar before it's too late.
