Surviving Suburban Adolescence: Kayla's Journey to High School

Comedy,Drama  United States of America

Eighth Grade is a 2018 coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Bo Burnham. The film follows the life of Kayla, a 13-year-old girl who struggles with social anxiety and self-doubt, as she navigates the last few days of middle school before starting high school.

Throughout the film, Kayla posts motivational videos on her YouTube channel, where she gives advice on how to be confident and popular, despite struggling with her own anxieties. She also has a crush on a boy named Aiden, one of the popular kids at school.

As Kayla tries to fit in with the cool kids during a pool party, awkwardly trying to impress Aiden, she ends up getting her heart broken. She also attends a school shooting drill, amplifying her anxieties and fears, as she is forced to simulate a real-life crisis situation.

However, with the help of her supportive father, who is trying to connect with her, and a high school student named Olivia, whom she shadows for a day, Kayla slowly gains confidence and realizes that she doesn't have to pretend to be someone she's not.

Eighth Grade explores the difficulties of growing up in the age of social media, where kids are expected to be perfect and popular. The film received critical acclaim for its realistic portrayal of adolescence and the complex issues that teens face today.
