Effects is a low-budget horror film directed by Dusty Nelson and released in 1980. It tells the story of a group of filmmakers who are shooting a horror movie in an abandoned psychiatric hospital. The crew consists of director Dominic (Joseph Pilato), producer Lacey (Susan Chapek), actor and stunt coordinator Nick (Bernard McKenna), sound engineer Celeste (Debra Gordon), and makeup artist/effects artist Joel (Tom Savini).
As the shoot goes on, strange things start to happen on set. The actors in the movie are being killed one by one, and the crew begins to suspect that the killings are not staged but are actually real. The tension between the crew members grows as they try to figure out who the killer is and escape from the hospital.
Meanwhile, the director Dominic becomes increasingly obsessed with the movie and starts to lose touch with reality. He believes that the murders are necessary to make the movie more authentic and is willing to sacrifice anyone for the sake of the film.
The climax of the movie reveals that the entire project was set up to make a snuff film. The crew members were not aware of this, but the director and producer had planned it from the beginning. They had recruited a group of homeless people to play the roles of the "victims" and filmed their real deaths for the movie.
In the end, only two crew members survive the ordeal. The movie ends with a shot of the completed film, which is revealed to be called "Effects," implying that the entire film we just watched was the snuff movie created by the characters in the movie.
Effects is a dark, disturbing film that preys on our fears of losing control and being manipulated. It is a must-see for horror fans who appreciate a good dose of psychological terror.
