Edward II is a historical drama film directed by Derek Jarman and based on Christopher Marlowe's play, The Troublesome Reign and Lamentable Death of Edward II, King of England. The film takes place in the 14th century and follows the story of King Edward II, who falls deeply in love with a commoner named Piers Gaveston. Edward showers Gaveston with gifts, titles, and positions within the kingdom, much to the angry disapproval of his courtiers and advisers.

When the queen, Isabella, and her advisor Mortimer, discover that Gaveston is a threat to their power, they conspire to have him exiled. This enrages Edward, who declares war on his own country to regain custody of his beloved Gaveston.
