Ecstasy

Drama,Romance  Czechoslovakia

Ecstasy is a Czechoslovak film directed by Gustav Machatý in 1933. The film stirred up controversy due to its breaking of various taboos at the time, including nudity and sexuality.

The film follows the character of Eva who is played by Hedy Lamarr in her first major acting role. Eva is a young woman who marries an older man for financial stability. However, her husband is obsessed with order and control, leaving little room for passion in their relationship. Eva becomes unhappy and despondent in her new life and returns to her father's house, where she meets a young man named Adam.

Eva and Adam fall in love, and they continue to meet in secret. The film features several scenes of Eva skinny dipping and frolicking in the lake with Adam. However, when Eva's husband discovers her infidelity, he becomes grief-stricken and sets out to find her.

The film ends with a dramatic meeting between Eva's husband and Adam. The husband, having realized the error of his ways, seeks forgiveness from Eva. The film was groundbreaking for its time due to its portrayal of female sexuality and agency. However, it also faced censorship and controversy, with some scenes being cut or heavily edited in certain countries.
