Hilary O'Neil, played by Julia Roberts, is devastated when she discovers that her boyfriend has cheated on her. She quits her job and decides to start afresh, leaving behind her old life and relationships. She comes across an advertisement for a private nurse and applies for the job.

The patient she is assigned to care for is a young man named Victor Geddes, played by Campbell Scott, who is suffering from leukemia. Victor is wealthy and has a luxurious home in the hills of San Francisco. His family is dysfunctional, and his relationship with them is strained, but he is close to his grandfather, played by Vincent D'Onofrio.

Hilary and Victor form a close bond, and they fall in love despite the knowledge that Victor's leukemia is terminal. Hilary is conflicted about the relationship because of the inevitable outcome, but Victor is determined to live the best life he can for the time he has left.
