Dunston Checks In is a family comedy film directed by Ken Kwapis and written by John Hopkins. The film was released in 1996 and featured an ensemble cast that included Jason Alexander, Faye Dunaway, Eric Lloyd, Rupert Everett, and Sam the Orangutan.
The story centers around Robert Grant, the general manager of the Majestic Hotel, who must deal with the arrival of a notorious jewel thief named Lord Rutledge. Robert is under pressure from his boss to ensure that Lord Rutledge gets the best possible service during his stay at the hotel. However, things take an unexpected turn when Lord Rutledge's accomplice, a mischievous orangutan named Dunston, escapes from his room and begins wreaking havoc on the hotel.
Dunston soon finds himself in the company of Robert's two young sons, Kyle and Brian, who are bored and looking for adventure. The boys take Dunston under their wing and try to teach him how to live a life of freedom outside of a life of crime.
As Dunston tries to evade Lord Rutledge and his henchmen, chaos ensues throughout the hotel, culminating in a hilarious finale that brings the entire cast together in a madcap chase.
Dunston Checks In was a moderate commercial success, grossing over $9 million at the box office. It was praised for its slapstick humor and the charming performance of Sam the Orangutan, who stole the show with his antics. The film has since become a cult classic among fans of family comedies.
