Dummy is a comedy-drama film directed by Greg Pritikin and released in 2002. The main character of the movie is Steven Schoichet (played by Adrien Brody), who is a socially awkward, unemployed office worker who lives in a rented basement apartment in Queens, New York. Steven's life takes an unexpected turn when he discovers his talent for ventriloquism and decides to pursue a career as a performer.

Steven creates his own puppet, named Fang, and starts performing at small clubs and open mics. He becomes increasingly dedicated to perfecting his act, spending hours practicing and refining his material with his friend and mentor, a veteran puppeteer named Mr. Grasping. As Steven becomes more successful as a ventriloquist, he also begins to develop a romantic relationship with his unemployment counselor, Lorena (played by Milla Jovovich).

However, Steven's pursuit of his new career is complicated by the interference of his dysfunctional family, including his overbearing mother (played by Illeana Douglas), his alcoholic father (played by Ron Leibman), and his slacker sister (played by Vera Farmiga). In addition, his best friend, a crude and tactless woman named Heidi (played by Jessica Walter), is also struggling with her own unrequited feelings for him.

As the story unfolds, Steven must navigate the various challenges and obstacles in his personal and professional life, including the pressures of performing, the expectations of his family, and his burgeoning romance with Lorena. The movie ultimately explores themes of self-discovery, creative expression, and the complexities of human relationships.
