Duel in the Sun is a 1946 Western film directed by King Vidor and produced by David O. Selznick. The film stars Jennifer Jones as Pearl Chavez, a young woman of mixed ethnicity who is taken in by her father's former lover Laura Belle McCanles (played by Lillian Gish). Pearl finds herself attracted to Laura Belle's two sons: the good-natured, responsible Jesse (played by Joseph Cotten) and the wild, reckless Lewt (played by Gregory Peck).
As Pearl's relationships with both men develop, tensions rise between them and their father, Senator McCanles (played by Lionel Barrymore). Lewt becomes increasingly possessive of Pearl, leading to a series of violent confrontations with Jesse. Meanwhile, Pearl is torn between her attraction to Lewt's dangerous allure and her love for Jesse's steady, dependable character.
The film was controversial for its frank portrayal of sexuality and violence, and was heavily edited before its release to comply with the Hays Code. Despite this, it was a commercial success and remains a cult classic among Western film fans.
