Unveiling Hearts: A Director's Journey of Love and Loss

Drama  Japan

Drive My Car is a Japanese drama film directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi and based on a short story by Haruki Murakami. The film centers around the life of Yusuke Kafuku, a stage actor and director who is still grieving the loss of his wife, Oto, who died suddenly two years earlier. As he struggles to move on, he accepts an offer to direct a production of Uncle Vanja at a theater festival in Hiroshima.

At the festival, Yusuke meets a young woman named Misaki, who is assigned to drive him around the city in a car provided by the festival organizers. Although Misaki is initially distant and introverted, Yusuke begins to open up to her about his past, sharing stories about his life with Oto and the struggles he faces living without her.

As Yusuke and Misaki spend more time together, they develop a close friendship, and Yusuke begins to learn more about Misaki's own troubled past. Through their conversations, they discover unexpected connections between their lives and come to see each other as sources of comfort and support.

As the film progresses, Yusuke's production of Uncle Vanja takes shape, and he is forced to confront the challenges of translating the play's themes of loss and regret into his own life. Through his work on the play and his relationship with Misaki, Yusuke begins to find hope and meaning in his life once again.
