The protagonist of the film, Frankie, is played by Ione Skye. She works at a coffee house in San Francisco and struggles with insomnia. Despite her sleepless nights, she is determined to find the perfect man and refuses to settle for anything less. She finds herself constantly disappointed by the men she dates and fears she will never meet someone who lives up to her impossibly high standards.
One day, a new employee named David (Mackenzie Astin) starts working at the coffee house. Frankie is immediately drawn to him and they quickly bond over their shared love of literature and philosophy. However, Frankie soon discovers that David has a girlfriend and is heartbroken.
Undeterred, Frankie and her friend Allison (Jennifer Aniston) decide to move to Los Angeles in search of new opportunities and, in Frankie's case, to try and win over David. She is convinced that fate will bring them together, despite the fact that he is in a committed relationship.
Throughout the film, Frankie navigates the ups and downs of her love life and experiences the highs and lows of pursuing her dreams. She ultimately learns that life is not always what we expect it to be and that sometimes we have to let go of our fantasies in order to discover what truly makes us happy.
Dream for an Insomniac also features cameos from notable actors such as Sean Astin and Michael Stipe, and is considered a cult classic for its quirky, offbeat humor and romantic storyline.
