In the movie Dragnet, Sgt. Joe Friday (played by Dan Aykroyd) is a by-the-book police officer who follows the rules and regulations to the T. When he is assigned to work with Pep Streebeck (played by Tom Hanks), a young detective who is wild, unpredictable, and does not adhere to the same set of rules, the two initially clash. However, as they work together to solve a series of strange and seemingly unrelated crimes, they begin to understand and appreciate each other's methods.
Their investigation leads them to the city's seedy underworld, where they discover a cult called P.A.G.A.N. (People Against Goodness And Normalcy), whose members are responsible for the thefts and robberies. Joe and Pep must navigate their way through a variety of eccentric characters, including a slimy televangelist (played by Christopher Plummer) and a flirty spiritual advisor (played by Alexandra Paul), as they try to uncover the truth behind P.A.G.A.N.'s activities and bring the cult to justice.
Along the way, Joe also has to deal with his overbearing and meddling aunt (played by Elizabeth Ashley), who is constantly trying to set him up with a nice girl and get him to loosen up a little. Despite their differences, Joe and Pep eventually become a formidable team and manage to crack the case. The movie ends with them driving off into the sunset, ready for their next adventure.
