Maya Dolittle is a young girl who has an incredible gift - she can talk to animals. However, she tries to keep this talent a secret and just communicate with her own pets. But when she gets discovered, she is brought to Los Angeles by Tiffany Monaco, a famous Hollywood star, to help her little puppy, who is having some problems.
Tiffany is worried about her puppy's behavior and thinks that Maya could help them communicate and understand each other better. Maya is excited about the opportunity and travels to L.A. with her animal friends. Once there, she finds out that the puppy is actually a boy that Tiffany had mistaken for a girl.
Maya soon discovers that the little puppy, Lucky, is not the only one who needs help. Tiffany's other pets are also behaving strangely, and Maya's gift comes in handy to solve the problem.
