Downtown '81 is a film set in the New York City art world of the early 1980s and stars artist Jean-Michel Basquiat as himself. The film was shot in 1981, but due to financial difficulties, it was not completed and released until 2000. The plot follows Basquiat as he desperately tries to raise money to pay his rent and reclaim his apartment after being evicted.
Throughout the day, Basquiat encounters a variety of colorful characters, including other artists, musicians, and performers. These encounters are often surreal and sometimes confrontational, as Basquiat navigates the chaotic and sometimes dangerous world of New York City's art scene. Along the way, we get glimpses into the lives and performances of these friends and acquaintances, many of whom are real-life figures from the downtown art scene.
Despite its low-budget production, Downtown '81 is notable for its portrayal of Basquiat and his unique perspective on the art world. The film also features a stellar soundtrack, with music from some of the most influential musicians of the era, including Blondie, Grandmaster Flash, and James White and the Blacks.
