Downsizing is a science-fiction comedy-drama movie directed by Alexander Payne and written by Payne and Jim Taylor. The film follows the life of an occupational therapist named Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) who is struggling to make ends meet, despite being highly educated and highly qualified. He and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) hear about a new experimental procedure that shrinks people down to a fraction of their size, allowing them to live in miniature communities with a much lower cost of living.

After considering their options, Paul and Audrey decide to undergo the procedure and move to Leisureland, a community built exclusively for the "downsized" population. There, they discover the benefits and challenges of being four inches tall, including living an environmentally-friendly lifestyle and navigating a complex social hierarchy.

As time passes, Paul becomes involved with a Vietnamese activist named Ngọc Lan Tran (Hong Chau) who was forcibly downsized against her will and is now confined to working as a cleaning lady. Together, they embark on a journey to save the planet and change the world, all while learning valuable lessons about life and love.

The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in August 2017 and was released in theaters in December of the same year. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its concept and performances but criticized its pacing and execution. Downsizing was nominated for several awards, including a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for Matt Damon.
