The movie Downhill Racer is a 1969 sports drama film directed by Michael Ritchie. It stars Robert Redford as David Chappellet, a talented skier from Idaho who dreams of becoming a world champion and breaking all existing records.

David joins the US skiing team and travels to Europe to compete in the Olympics. However, he clashes with the team's coach, Eugene Claire (played by Gene Hackman), who emphasizes teamwork and discipline over individual ambition. David's arrogant and reckless attitude puts himself and others at risk, leading to conflicts with his teammates and coach.

Despite his attitude, David proves himself to be a skilled racer and wins several races, including the legendary Hahnenkamm downhill. However, his personal relationships suffer as he becomes increasingly isolated and competitive. He begins a brief affair with a European woman, but even that ends in disappointment.

In the end, David fails to win the gold medal at the Olympics, coming in second place. He realizes that his pursuit of victory has left him alone and unfulfilled, and he quits skiing to return to his hometown in Idaho. The film ends with David skiing alone on a remote mountain, reflecting on his journey and the price he paid for his ambition.
