Down by Law is a comedy-drama film directed by Jim Jarmusch. The film follows three disparate characters who end up in jail on minor charges in New Orleans. Zack, a disc jockey who has lost his job, Robby, a pimp who has run afoul of the law, and Jack, an Italian tourist who doesn't speak English and has been framed for a crime he didn't commit.
After a series of misunderstandings and mishaps, the three men escape from jail together and set out on a journey through the bayou. Along the way, they encounter a variety of colorful characters, including a pair of Cajun brothers who offer them lodgings and make them work in their illegal moonshine operation.
As they travel deeper into the swamp, the three men begin to bond and share their stories with each other. Zack talks about his failed relationship, Robby reveals the truth about his troubled childhood, and Jack reminisces about his lost love.
Eventually, the trio is captured by the police and brought back to jail, but their time on the road has changed them, and they return with a new perspective on life. The film ends with each of them taking their own path and starting anew.
