Don't Be Afraid of the Dark follows the story of Sally, a lonely, withdrawn young girl who is sent to live with her father Alex (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend Kim (Katie Holmes) in their new, sprawling mansion, which they are restoring to its former glory. Despite the grandeur of her new home, Sally struggles to settle in, and feels increasingly isolated and excluded from her father and Kim's relationship.
One day, while exploring the labyrinthine basement, Sally discovers a hidden door that leads to a sealed-up furnace in the bowels of the house. She begins to hear strange whispering voices beckoning her from behind the grate, and her curiosity leads her to pry it open and release a group of malevolent creatures who have lived in the bowels of the house for centuries. The creatures, which resemble twisted, gnarled homunculi, soon begin to torment Sally, trying to lure her into their shadowy world, where she will become one of their own.
As the creatures become more and more aggressive, Alex and Kim start to notice strange occurrences around the house, and begin to unravel the horrifying truth about the mansion's dark past. With Sally's life hanging in the balance, Alex and Kim must race against time to save her from the creatures' clutches before it's too late.
