The Unraveling of Mona's Isolation

Drama  Canada

Donkeyhead is a touching drama that follows the story of Mona, a struggling writer who has given up on her dreams to care for her father, a Sikh immigrant living in the United States. Mona has always been the black sheep of the family, consciously rejecting their traditional values and shunning their expectations of her. Despite her father's deteriorating health, she remains steadfast in her belief that she is doing the right thing by caring for him.

When her father suffers a debilitating stroke, Mona's three successful siblings come to her doorstep. Each of them has their own idea of how to handle the situation, and Mona finds herself caught in the middle of their conflicting opinions. Her eldest brother, Harpreet, is a successful lawyer who wants to take legal control of their father's affairs. Her younger sister, Deepti, is a well-known psychiatrist who believes their father needs more specialized care. And their youngest brother, Varun, is a businessman who sees their father's illness as an opportunity to uproot him to India, where he can receive cheaper medical care.

As Mona struggles to balance her siblings' desires with her own stubbornness and her father's wishes, tensions rise and old wounds are reopened. She finds herself confronted with the reality that she cannot care for her father alone and must face her fears and ask for help. With the help of her siblings, she comes to a difficult decision that may change their family forever.

Donkeyhead explores themes of cultural identity, familial obligation, and the complexities of caring for an aging parent. Through each character's distinct perspective, the film sheds light on the challenges of navigating cultural traditions in a new world while facing the realities of an aging population. The film is a heart-wrenching portrayal of a family's struggle to find common ground while preserving their heritage and coming to terms with their past.
