The Silly Symphonies animated short film Donald Duck: The Wise Little Hen was directed by Wilfred Jackson and released by Walt Disney Productions on June 9, 1934. The film is based on the traditional fairy tale "The Little Red Hen," with Donald Duck and his friend Peter Pig in the roles of two lazy and mischievous farm animals who refuse to help the hen with her chores.
In the film, the hen is trying to plant some wheat seeds, and she asks Donald and Peter if they will help her. Donald and Peter try to get out of the work by pretending to be sick. However, the hen sees through their deception and sets them straight about the value of hard work.
Eventually, the wheat grows into a bountiful crop, and the hen asks Donald and Peter if they would like to help her bake the bread. However, the two animals still refuse to help her, saying they have other plans. The hen then decides to eat the bread herself, leaving Donald and Peter hungry and regretful for their laziness.
The film was well-received upon its release and is now considered a classic. Donald Duck quickly became a popular character, and this film was the first in a long line of Disney productions that would showcase his mischievous and lovable personality.
