Dom Hemingway, played by Jude Law, is a cocky, foul-mouthed criminal who was recently released from prison after serving 12 years for refusing to snitch on his boss, Mr. Fontaine. Upon his release, Dom reunites with his best friend and partner-in-crime, Dickie, and they set off to collect the money Dom believes he is owed for keeping quiet all those years.
Dom's first stop is to see Mr. Fontaine, who has been living a life of luxury in the south of France. Dom demands his money, but Fontaine refuses and instead offers him a job to steal a valuable piece of artwork. Despite the job ending in disaster, Dom ends up getting his money in a final showdown with Fontaine.
Throughout the movie, Dom struggles to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Evelyn, who he has not seen since he went to prison. He also deals with the consequences of his reckless and selfish behavior, including the loss of his relationship with his ex-wife.
Although the plot of the movie centers around Dom's desire for money, the true heart of the story is his journey to redemption and trying to make amends for his past mistakes. The film is a darkly humorous and gritty look at the life of a criminal who is trying to find his way back to the light.
