Dr. Dolittle is a physician who lives in Victorian England. After losing his wife seven years earlier, he has become a recluse, spending all of his time tending to his animal friends. However, he is coerced into embarking on a mission to save the life of the Queen of England.
On the way, he discovers that he can talk to animals and has the ability to help them with their problems. He sets out to retrieve a rare fruit that will help the Queen, encountering various challenges along the way, including a chase by a vicious tiger, a battle with a vicious sea monster, and an encounter with a group of pirates.
Dolittle is accompanied on his journey by his animal friends, including a sassy parrot, a neurotic gorilla, a stubborn ostrich, and a frightened polar bear. Along the way, he learns to overcome his grief and reconnect with humanity. Ultimately, he saves the Queen's life and discovers a new purpose for his life.
