Doctor Zhivago is a historical epic set during the Russian Revolution and World War I. Omar Sharif plays the titular character, Yuri Zhivago, a doctor and poet in Moscow who is married to Tonya (Geraldine Chaplin) but falls in love with Lara (Julie Christie), a woman with whom he has a chance meeting.

As the revolution and civil war unfold, Yuri's life becomes increasingly tumultuous. When he is conscripted into the army, he serves as a field doctor, witnessing the horrors of war firsthand. Meanwhile, Lara becomes involved with revolutionary Pasha (Tom Courtenay), who later becomes a ruthless Bolshevik leader, and she has a child with him.

After the war, Yuri and Lara's paths cross again, and they rekindle their relationship. However, their love is forbidden by societal pressures and their own personal obligations. Yuri decides to leave his hometown and family behind and flees to the countryside with Lara, who has become a widow, and her daughter. They live together, but their happiness is short-lived as the Soviet government eventually finds them and separates them.

Throughout the film, Yuri's poetry plays a significant role in the story, highlighting the beauty of Russian culture even amidst the chaos of war and revolution. The film's themes of love, loss, and the struggle for personal freedom are set against the backdrop of one of the most pivotal moments in Russian history.

Doctor Zhivago won five Academy Awards, including Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction. It was praised for its sweeping visuals, memorable performances, and beautiful music.
