Doctor Who: The Movie is a 1996 television film that serves as a continuation of the original Doctor Who series, which aired from 1963 to 1989. It was produced by the BBC in collaboration with Universal Television and aired on Fox in the United States. The movie is set between the end of the classic series and the beginning of the revived series in 2005.

The film stars Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor, who is mortally wounded by a gang while trying to transport the remains of his arch-nemesis, the Master, to Gallifrey. The Doctor is then taken to a hospital in San Francisco, where he regenerates into the Eighth Doctor (played by Paul McGann) after surgery goes wrong. The film introduces a new companion, Grace Holloway (played by Daphne Ashbrook), a cardiologist who becomes involved in the Doctor's travels through time and space.

The plot of the film revolves around the Master (played by Eric Roberts) attempting to steal the Doctor's remaining regenerations to prolong his own life. The Doctor and Grace team up to stop him, with the help of a group of San Francisco gang members. The film also features appearances by other Doctor Who villains, such as the Daleks and the Eye of Harmony.

Despite high expectations, Doctor Who: The Movie was a commercial failure and did not lead to a full revival of the series until 2005. However, it remains a cult favorite among Doctor Who fans and is notable for being the sole appearance of McGann as the Doctor on-screen.
