In the movie Doctor Sleep, Dan Torrance is haunted by the events that occurred in the Overlook Hotel, which he and his mother escaped from years ago. He has become an alcoholic and is struggling to cope with his psychic abilities, which he refers to as his "shine." Meanwhile, Abra, a young girl who also has the ability to shine, comes to Dan seeking help and guidance. Abra has powerful abilities and is able to communicate with Dan telepathically.
The True Knot, a group of immortal beings who feed off of the "shining" of others, become aware of Abra's power and set their sights on capturing her. Led by Rose the Hat, the True Knot hunts down children with psychic abilities in order to extract their "steam," which is the essence of their shine and provides the cult members with immortality.
Dan and Abra must team up to stop the True Knot and protect themselves and others who possess the shining. They travel to the site of the Overlook Hotel, which has been abandoned for years, and face a final showdown with the True Knot. In the end, Dan sacrifices himself to save Abra and destroy the True Knot, finding redemption for his past and finding peace in his own death.
