The four women, played by Donna Dixon, Fran Drescher, Lydia Lei, and Lynn Whitfield, mistake Skridlow for a notorious pimp named Doctor Detroit. They believe he is the only one who can save their business, the plush Club Cleo, from the clutches of the evil gangster, Mom. Desperate to help the women and also feeling an unexpected sense of liberation, Skridlow takes on the role of Doctor Detroit and begins to assert himself in ways he never thought possible.
As Doctor Detroit, Skridlow becomes a hero to the club's employees and a legend on the streets. He also attracts the attention of Mom and his goons, who see him as a threat to their business. The situation comes to a head in a thrilling showdown between Doctor Detroit and Mom, which ends with Skridlow being proclaimed a hero and awarded a key to the city.
The film, directed by Michael Pressman and written by Bruce Jay Friedman, was released in 1983. It was a critical and commercial failure, but has since gained a cult following for its offbeat humor, lively performances, and quirky charm. It stars Dan Aykroyd as Skridlow/Doctor Detroit, with support from Howard Hesseman, T.K. Carter, and the aforementioned quartet of lovely ladies. The soundtrack features songs by Devo and James Brown.
