Dirty Computer is a 50-minute sci-fi film that tells the story of Jane 57821 (played by Janelle Monรกe), a young woman living in a near-future society where citizens are referred to as "computers." In this society, conformity is paramount, and anyone who doesn't fit into the government's rigid definition of what it means to be a "clean" computer is labeled a "dirty computer" and forced to undergo a procedure that wipes their memory and removes their individuality.
Jane is a musician who falls in love with a fellow "dirty computer" named Zen (played by Tessa Thompson), and together they begin to explore their identities and find ways to resist the oppressive government. But when they're captured and brought to a secret compound for rehabilitation, they must fight to maintain their sense of self and stay true to their beliefs.
Throughout the film, Jane's story is interspersed with music videos for songs from Janelle Monรกe's album of the same name, which explore themes of love, sexuality, and identity. The film is a visually stunning and thought-provoking exploration of what it means to be human, and the dangers of giving too much power to machines and governments.
