Based on the novel Dirt Music by Tim Winton, the movie adaptation follows the story of Georgie and Lu as they embark on a passionate affair in the remote coastal town of White Point in Western Australia. Georgie is an unhappy and restless woman who feels trapped in her marriage to Jim, a wealthy and controlling fisherman who provides her with material comfort but little else.
When Georgie meets Lu, a handsome and mysterious poacher who is passionate about music and the wilderness, she is immediately drawn to him. Lu is a free spirit who lives off the land and has little patience for the rules and conventions of society.
