The movie begins with a thriving community of dinosaurs living in the beautiful and bountiful forests of the prehistoric world. One day, a meteorite shower crashes down on their homeland, destroying everything in its path. A lone dinosaur egg survives the catastrophe and is discovered by a family of lemurs. They take the egg to their tree, hatch it and raise the newborn dinosaur as their own.
As the dinosaur grows, he realizes that he is different from his lemur siblings. He is much larger and has a keen sense of smell which reveals to him what he truly is. When a herd of his own kind passes by their tree, he follows them, only to be mercilessly chased away by the pack. Alone and confused, the dinosaur eventually meets an iguanodon named Aladar, who takes him in and teaches him to survive in the harsh wilderness.
Aladar and his companions are part of a group of dinosaurs who are on a perilous journey to a sanctuary, where they hope to seek refuge from the disastrous aftermath of the meteorite shower. Along the way, they face many challenges such as treacherous terrain, dangerous predators and scarce resources. Aladar and the orphaned dinosaur form a bond with the rest of the creatures, who share their own stories of loss and survival. The group endures many hardships and encounters various allies and foes, including a group of bloodthirsty Carnotaurs.
As they finally reach the sanctuary, they discover that it is not what they expected. They must all work together to make a new home and fight against the dangers that continue to threaten them. The orphaned dinosaur is reunited with his own kind and finds a place where he belongs. In the end, the group learns the importance of friendship, teamwork, and perseverance in the face of adversity.
